SEKISUI SPI
Aurora Borealis Economy Class Seatback

This project was born from a panel discussion at 2019 Redcabin Aviation Summit focusing on how OEMs could help airlines innovate aircraft seating and interiors. Asked questions relating to the next generation of the passenger experience in economy class, the panel compiled a wish list of features. The dream economy class seat would include three tray variations, a "super widget" capable of informing the passenger of everything from cabin temperature and pressure, to lavatory availability, and even where a passenger's pet is in the cargo hold.

Designed with TrendWorks.

PROTOTYPE

TrendWorks and I created the design and 3D model, as well as CMF design. We then collaborated closely with suppliers to craft fabrics, connectors, technology, thermoplastics, forming tools and molds, foam, and much more to build a quick turnaround prototype. From initial conversation to a full sized, fully functional seat prototype all were impressively completed in under six months.
